Following a joint declaration by the mayors of Los Angeles and Long Beach setting zero emission goals for the ports of Los Angeles and Long beach, the ports announced a schedule for the finalization of the Clean Air Action Plan (CAAP) 2017 Update.
- July 19, 2017: The ports will release the draft CAAP 2017 Update and solicit comments from the public on the proposed strategies to reduce air emissions.
- August 30, 2017: The ports will hold a public workshop on the draft CAAP 2017 Update in Wilmington, California.
- September 18, 2017: The period for the submission of public comments will close at 5:00 p.m.
- November 2017: The ports have targeted November 2017 for the adoption and approval of the final CAAP 2017 Update.
Adopted in 2006, CAAP identifies strategies to improve air quality in the San Pedro Bay by reducing pollution from ships, trucks, trains, cargo-handling equipment and harbor crafts that operate in and around the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach. Since 2005, reports indicate that CAAP has resulted in emission reductions in excess of 85% for particulate matter, 50% for nitrogen oxides, and 95% for sulfur oxides. CAAP was updated in 2010.
As previously reported, the mayors of Los Angeles and Long Beach committed to a number of emission reduction goals, including obtaining zero emissions for cargo-handling equipment by 2030, zero emissions for on-road drayage trucks serving the ports by 2035, and a commitment to expand at-berth emissions reductions for container ships, as well as ships that carry other types of cargo.
