California sent shock waves around the world in June 2018 when lawmakers unanimously approved the California Consumer Privacy Act. The new California privacy law is the toughest, most consumer-friendly privacy regulation in the United States. Although businesses with an international presence will recognize some similarities between the new California law and the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), businesses with a strictly domestic footprint are likely to be surprised by the reach of the new law and the powerful rights it bestows on consumers.
