On September 22, 2016, Victor Escobar was presented Keesal, Young & Logan’s 2016 California Bar Foundation Diversity Scholarship.  Victor is the ninth recipient of KYL’s Diversity Scholarship through the California Bar Foundation. KYL Shareholder and California Bar Foundation President Julie Taylor hosted the scholarship reception and celebration, where 34 Diversity Scholarships were presented to extraordinarily deserving first year law students. These scholarships provide critical financial assistance to rising first-year law students from communities underrepresented in the California Bar, with the goal of increasing diversity in the legal profession.

Victor, now a first year law student at U.C. Hastings, came to the United States from Peru at the age of 13.  Due to limited resources, he often had to work two jobs while attending school but still graduated from Cal State Chico with a Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science. Recalling his own experiences as an immigrant, Victor now volunteers with immigrant’s rights organizations and participates in My American DREAMs, a national television project sponsored by the Sonoma County Public Broadcasting Station (PBS).

“We congratulate Victor and all of this year’s deserving scholars who have impressed us with their determination, academic accomplishments and commitment to giving back to their communities,” said Julie Taylor.  “It’s an honor to partner with California Bar Foundation in supporting these students and in working towards a more diverse and inclusive bar.”

The California Bar Foundation is the center of philanthropy for California’s lawyers, a major force in diversity efforts for the bar, and a leader in ensuring access to justice for all Californians.  The California Bar Foundation is California’s largest independent source of statewide law school diversity scholarships and pipeline program grants, and has instituted a first of its kind postgraduate legal fellowship placing diverse lawyers in some of the most underserved parts of the state.  Learn more about the Diversity Scholarship Program here.
