Jay Carlson is a Keesal, Young & Logan associate based in Seattle. His practice focuses on civil litigation including financial services, intellectual property, municipal, employment, and maritime matters.
Mr. Carlson graduated with honors from the University of Washington School of Law in 2000 where he served as Executive Articles Editor of the Washington Law Review. Based on academic performance, he was elected to both the Order of the Coif and the Order of the Barristers. In June of 2000, the International Academy of Trial Lawyers awarded Mr. Carlson the Trial Advocate of the Year Award. That same year the National Academy of Trial Lawyers awarded him the Lewis Powell Medal for Excellence in Trial Advocacy.
Mr. Carlson has extensive experience handling complex commercial litigation in state and federal court, including municipal, intellectual property, trade secret, and employment litigation. In addition to his
trial work, Mr. Carlson handles appeals. He has composed full merits briefing to the United States Supreme Court and to other federal and state courts of appeal. Mr. Carlson has also presented argument to the Washington State Supreme Court. See Kilbury v. Franklin County, 151 Wn.2d 552 (2004).
Prior to starting his litigation practice, Mr. Carlson served as a law clerk for Judge Thomas S. Zilly of the United States District Court for the Western District of Washington. Representative published decisions from his clerkship include Doe v. 2TheMart.com, Inc., 140 F. Supp. 2d 1088 (W.D. Wash. 2001), and United States v. Muro-Inclan, 249 F.3d 1180 (9th Cir. 2001).
In 2003, the Urban League of Seattle awarded Mr. Carlson the Spirit Award for successful pro bono representation of the League. Mr. Carlson has been named a Rising Star of the Legal Profession from 2002-2007 and in 2010,
and he has been a frequent speaker at continuing legal education seminars and other legal community events.
